Dear Robert Mazzuca and the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA),
My name is Michael Weber; I was a member of Boy Scout Troop 179 in Van Nuys, CA, and in July 2004 I became a rather unconventional Eagle Scout. It is with very mixed feelings that I am returning my Eagle Badge because you continue your policy of banning gay boys and men from the BSA.
In some ways, this feels inevitable. I was at odds with many of the more conservative BSA attitudes at just 14 years old. When I was Senior Patrol Leader and had spiked green hair, other troops would question my abilities to lead. When one of my best friends left our troop and soon became openly gay, people questioned me, as if I were “guilty” by association. And when I was told my anti-war protesting could affect my ability to receive Eagle Scout, I was the one who began to question, “Is this the right organization for me?”
However, I carried on. I gained invaluable skills in personal management, leadership, and outdoors activities. I carried out a park restoration Eagle Scout project, and I twice held the position of Senior Patrol Leader. Then, months before my 18th birthday, I nearly halted my Eagle application process. I wasn’t sure that receiving the highest honor from a homophobic, pro-hunting, anti-Atheist organization was something I could be proud of. But in the end, I decided that if BSA could accept me as I was, then I would gladly accept the Eagle rank. When it came time for my Board of Review, I was pressured by those close to me to lie in response to questions that could compromise my likelihood of passing.
I didn’t. A Scout is trustworthy. I entered the meeting with a blue mohawk hairstyle, and I answered honestly that I didn’t have a single God yet I didn’t feel a spiritual void, that protesting unjust wars made me a better patriot, not a traitor, and that the BSA was on the wrong side of history when it came to gay acceptance. I was told by the Board that they had never deliberated a candidate for that long before - but I passed.
As you can see, the day I obtained the Eagle rank was a very proud moment, but not only for the same reason it is for most. For nearly a decade now, I have felt a great sense of accomplishment at having earned the Eagle rank as such an unlikely candidate. But this pride doesn’t outweigh the burden on my
conscience.
It is with tears in my eyes, a heavy heart, and a sick stomach that I return my hard-won Eagle badge. I respectfully ask you to join the right side of history and begin welcoming gay scouts and leaders.
A unconventional Eagle Scout no more,
[signed]Michael A. Weber
Eagle Scout, July 2004
Troop 179, Van Nuys, CA
Mr. Mazzuca and Committee Members:
If you have taken the time to read the thousands of letters I know you have already received, there is probably not much I can add that would cause you to change the BSA’s stance on Gay/Lesbians serving in/with the Boy Scouts. A policy voted on in dark rooms with shadows of evil. However, like all who have taken the time, I also must renounce this policy and as a token of my sincerity return to you my Eagle Scout Certificate. This is no easy task.
I grew up in scouts and received my Eagle Scout in 1965; Went to one world and one national jamboree; Served as a flag bearer in the Rose Parade; and as a Junior assistant Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor. I served 23 years in the US Air Force. Met many Eagle Scouts during my tour as well as during my professional career following.
I had the opportunity to read a couple of letters on the internet. One gentleman spoke in terms of each point of the Scout Law. I feel the same as he. The Scout Oath also has within it specific meaning that decries your bigotry.
On my honor (what honor can a man have if he discriminates and demonstrates hatred toward a group of otherwise honorable people?)
I will do my best to God (God is no respecter of persons. No matter the affiliation, the word of God is love and respect between all people. Those who willfully and spitefully exclude and hurt others cannot be counted as God’s)
And my Country (the United States of America was founded upon the principle of freedom. To deny anyone the benefits of scouting because of race, creed, gender, or beliefs is un-American).
And to obey the Scout Law – others have discussed how the BSA’s decision is the antithesis of the Scout Law
To help other people at all times (how can we help other people at all times when the organization we represent preaches in word and deed that other people are not important?)To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight (Keeping the body, mind and soul at peak efficiency is only attainable through obedience to strong moral principles. Discrimination does nothing but breed hate and contempt and consume the soul to where the body has no more feeling).
Then there is the Scout Slogan, Do a good turn daily. How can you and “the others” feel that you can do any good turns when your actions speak volumes against it? Does the good turn only have to be rendered to certain groups of people? Does the Scout Leadership feel they are omnipotent enough to decide who should and should not receive the good turn?
Lastly, I will address the manner of the religious lobby, the radical religious right that pressures the BSA to make such unpatriotic and un-American decisions. There is little argument that the BSA receives a significant portion of its funding from the Mormon Church and, hmmmmm, the Mormons are bigots as well. Where was the BSA when the Mormon Church was discriminating against the blacks by not allowing them to serve in their scout troops? Absent. And now, where is the BSA when the strong arm of the Mormons and other radicals are encouraging the continued bigotry but against another honorable group of US citizens? Again absent. The BSA leadership has come to the decision to demonstrate no moral conviction unless it is whispered in their ear.
I have rambled on enough. When the BSA decides to take a genuine moral stand and allow the benefits of scouting to all, I will reconsider my decision and be counted as a member and Eagle Scout. However, at this time, I relinquish both.
Sincerely,Alvin Oram

I’m 20, and this guy looked younger than my high school classmates, and dressed the same. He got all bent out of shape about me asking these series of questions which are routine and state law.
“Are you a US citizen? …. Yes you are okay great. Are you using this ammunition for a hand gun or a long rifle? (They are interchangeable.) … Since you are using these for a .22 hand gun can I please have your pistol permit?” *Shows me NYPD id, and says “THIS COUNTS AS MY PISTOL PERMIT!”
I’ve never had anyone show me that as a pistol permit, usually cops just have their permit with them, and I wasn’t sure which number to enter as it has like 3 different long type numbers that could be the number, so I walkie to my manager which number to enter, and I did it. This whole transaction takes about 3 minutes. The guy huffs off and is like “I HAVE NEVER!!!” I’m just like …. the fuck.
You forgot the number one rule when dealing with cops: They don’t follow the rules — they make the rules.
