The latest GOPer to dabble in the ridiculous fantasy that President Obama wasn’t actually born in the United States: Rep. Steve King (R-IA).

During a tele-townhall meeting late last week, King was asked about his views on whether President Obama is a natural-born American citizen. The Iowa Congressman noted that his staff had investigated the matter and found birth announcements in the two Hawaii newspapers the week after Obama’s birth. However, King went on to float the absurd notion that his parents “might’ve announced that by telegram from Kenya.”

The fact that this “issue” even still needs to be addressed is beyond silly. If Obama’s birth certificate itself isn’t enough to convince the likes of Steve King and Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio about where the president was born, no amount of evidence will.

Republican Mitt Romney’s campaign unleashed new attacks on President Barack Obama Tuesday, with one of Romney’s top surrogates saying he wished Obama “would learn to be an American.”

On a conference call with reporters, former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu blasted Obama and his campaign, calling them a “bunch of liars.”

A senior at Gibson County High School in Tennessee was kicked out of her prom last Saturday for wearing a dress that resembled the Confederate battle flag, according to The Jackson Sun.

School officials told 18-year-old Texanna Edwards that she could not wear the “offensive and inappropriate” dress, but she could change and come back to the event. However, Edwards refused to change out of her custom made dress and consequentially was not allowed to attend prom.

A teacher had advised Edwards not to wear the dress. But Edwards thought that she would still be allowed to attend prom, even though it might offend some people, she told The Jackson Sun. Students at the high school had regularly worn Confederate flags without incident, she said.

Gibson County Special School District Superintendent Eddie Pruett said there had been racial incidents at the high school in recent years.

Schools in the Southern U.S. have struggled to balance students’ First Amendment rights with the need to ensure a safe learning environment for students.

In 2006, a Tennessee high school student was suspended for wearing an image of the Confederate battle flag. He later sued the school district for violating his First Amendment rights, but the lawsuit was dismissed by a federal court, according to CBS News. The judge held that it was reasonable to assume that the racially-charged image could cause “substantial disruption to the school environment.”

Fun fact: if you wear something resembling the Confederate flag and expect to be treated with respect, fuck you.

Throughout President Obama’s first two years in office, Senate Republicans waged war on his judiciary nominees — allowing only a handful of them to be confirmed. The GOP’s obstructionism grew so bad that conservative Chief Justice John Roberts scolded the Senate for its dismal confirmation record. A new report by the Alliance for Justice shows that the GOP’s obstructionism was truly historic — the worst obstructionism any new president faced at any point in American history:

[T]he Senate confirmed fewer of [Obama’s] district and circuit nominees than every president back to Jimmy Carter, and the lowest percentage of nominees – 58% – than any president in American history at this point in a President’s first term. By comparison, Presidents George W. Bush, Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Reagan and Carter had 77%, 90%, 96%, 98%, and 97% of their nominees confirmed after two years, respectively.

Senate Republicans’ mass obstruction of Obama’s judges stands in stark contrast to the treatment afforded to past presidents. Indeed, the Senate confirmed fewer judges during Obama’s first two years in office than it did during the same period in the Carter Administration, even though the judiciary was 40 percent smaller while Carter was in office.

Disturbingly, much of this obstructionism targeted women and people of color. Although Obama’s nominees are the most diverse in American history, every district court nominee with unanimous Republican opposition in the Senate Judiciary Committee was a woman or person of color.
