Bill O’Reilly wants to confront Jon Stewart on this because a debate would help to legitimize the Fox News’ claims that Common’s White House appearance is an issue. In reality, there is nothing to debate. The Common controversy is a ginned up attack on Obama that is designed to push the message that the President is un-American.
By appearing on Fox News to discuss it, Stewart would be giving credibility to a smear against Obama. Every time Stewart and O’Reilly hook up, it is ratings gold for both. What could be better for Fox News than to have the host of a popular program with younger viewers come on their network, and hopefully bring some of his viewers, who can exposed to their anti-Obama propaganda? Fox News would be using Jon Stewart to help push a baseless story.
As far as any kind of debate is concerned, Stewart has owned O’Reilly in the past, and will continue to do so in the future. There are lots of issues out there for Jon Stewart and Bill O’Reilly to debate, but a debate about Common would only help the Fox News agenda and be a waste of Stewart’s time.
Another Stewart/O’Reilly segment would be great, but the focus of the debate should be how Fox News can justify smear campaigns against Obama as news.
Jon Stewart should pass on O’Reilly’s proposed Common debate, because Fox News doesn’t need his help to push their Obama hate.
